We’re excited to share that Paul Anastas, along with co-authors Julie Zimmerman, Predrag Petrovic, and Tobias Muellers, have been named one of the winners of the 2023 American Chemical Society Environmental Science & Technology’s Best Paper Awards in the Policy Analysis category for their publication, Toward Property-Based Regulation. Congratulations to the team!
The paper presents a new paradigm for chemical regulation - property-based regulation - which addresses the limitations of the current chemical-by-chemical approach. By focusing on physicochemical properties rather than individual chemical identities, this framework enables more efficient, scalable, and transparent chemical assessments. It also reduces regulatory burdens, accelerates chemical discovery, and ensures greater consistency and predictability for industries. The authors outline a path for implementing this approach in the U.S., offering clear steps for government, academia, NGOs, and industry to collaborate in advancing this transformative shift.
